I rather think the former colonies are feeling a tad cut off from The Royal Family, and I doubt very much that The Prince of Wales and his choices have done much to hold the esteem of the peoples of the Commonwealth countries. "What is the point of doing this"?...............I think the point might well be that people are just plain fed up with the antics of some members of the Royal Family.

If people are "fed up" then why do things like this, instead of scrapping the whole institution.

State swears it is loyal to people, not the Queen --The TimesAS THE Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh prepare to open the Commonwealth Games in Australia next week, the country’s oldest parliament has voted to abolish its oath of allegiance to the monarch.
Henceforth members of the New South Wales parliament will pledge loyalty to “Australia and the people of New South Wales”. The decision was made days after the state abolished its 140-year-old representative office in London and announced that it would focus on trade relations within the Asia-Pacific region.
