An announcement has been "imminent" for years.  While I doubt the story is true, I am curious about their sources and what it was the magazine staff heard that makes them comfortable making this their cover story.  Seems awfully bold of them if they know the story probably isn't true, especially after the embarassment they must have endured following the Harry fiasco.

Harry fiasco, the journalist of NI was PROMOTED (I was in shock), I thought she (journalist) would be fired.  The editors of NI made a statement "Sorry, but not sorry"

Even after they had to apologize?  Wow.

In that case, I doubt this story even more.  If this magazine is not just looking the other way on or accepting a culture of journalistic irresponsibility, but promoting one just to sell papers, then it's no surprise they went for just about the biggest headline they could.  Hopefully this incident will bring them the embarassment they deserve.   smile

^Absolutely. However, it is interesting that this is the same mag that blew Harry's cover when he was in Afghanistan. Then again, they could just be taking their chances that they might be right!

I can’t imagine a Royal engagement to be a strong likelihood given Williams' forthcoming attachment with the Navy.  I’d give more credence to this article if it had appeared after or toward the end of Williams Navy stint, but certainly not before hand.

Although I wouldn’t rule it out completely, the timing seems rather unusual - especially for a Senior Royal.  Engagement speculation was rife during the previous Mustique holiday, so I’m betting this cover story is an extension of last years hype. - it would fit the pattern.

If, however, William has indeed proposed and the magazine is accurate in it’s reporting, I’d guess that an official announcement would be postponed until William has completed his attachment making this cover story somewhat premature.

I just hope Kate doesn’t have kittens keeping this news under her hat for several months to come

God Save England!

New Idea is a load of hogwash. They have been in a bit of strife lately for completely making things up about local Aussie "celebs" like Rove, Lleyton Hewitt and Terry Irwin.

I am to the strong belief that they didn't have "sources" that broker the Hary war thing - I belive they just made it up and what do you know.... they got it right.

I agree Shoe_gal....New Idea or No Idea has usually a lot of stuff that is made up in it. I remember a couple of months ago the mag had William on the cover dancing with a blonde Australian woman. The magazine had on its front cover something along the lines of "Kate's shock as Prince William cheats on her with mystery blonde woman".

It turns out the photo of William and the blonde woman was taken years ago at a friend of William's wedding and the blonde woman was just someone who William asked for a dance of something along those lines.

I don't believe he has proposed to her yet, I think she has another 2 or 3 years of waiting for her ring. Thats if she is still his girlfriend.

the William Kate engagement hasn't even happened and it's already old news!  laugh  New Idea isn't the first to say they've gotten engaged.  that's been going on in the media for years.  IF its true it would be a shame for a tabloid to breakthe news.  i'd rather hear it as "Clarence House has announed...." which at this point is the only way i'd believe that Kate and William are going to get married! laugh

so i have my doubts about this even though they were right about Harry's deployment.  if this is true then New Idea either has one hell of a insider and William (or Kate) has one hell of a leak.

IF its true, me thinks the insider would be the same person who leaked PH military op, although thinking about it, the drudge was the first one who breached PH - no one reads that biog - so NI copy/pasted, I think that's how the apologies sorry, but not sorry for blowing the press blackout came out, or that's what NI said.

I work for Woolworths and during my break I like to read the articles from New Idea. I've read the article and basically its the same as the speculation about their holiday in the carribeans and that it's the perfect place to propose.

Drudge doesn't seem to want to bite this one lately despite prompting smile
I think they have been engaged for awhile now, and probably have no intention of announcing anytime soon.

^^I'd like to believe this, but I don't think Kate is that discreet. She would be parading up and down the Chelsea high street grinning like a Cheshire cat if that were the case... unless the deal weren't really secure, and was instead contingent on her absolute silence and toeing a particular line. Sort of like a henpecked man who is on the verge of caving in, but has floated the idea of an engagement in the future, which could be withdrawn at any moment. Negative stories coming out now (laziness, waiting to live off the public purse, etc.) won't help though. At this rate, anything is possible, especially given the tabloid's new PR drive to get William to propose before he leaves for the navy. Is this why he will be spending a much shorter time there than he was originally intended to, that the plan is for him to rush home to be (permanently) shackled to the ball and chain?

Theory: Did this new leak come from her relative in Australia? Did the last one (about Harry)? It seems to me that while New Idea may have guessed about Harry and got lucky, it is possible that someone with inside info made a bundle by selling information to the Australian rag. And may be doing it again here. It's a safe distance, so the source in the UK would feel secure in the (misguided) knowledge that s/he is safe. Why don't those MI6 people do their jobs?

Of course, it may just be more hype, the mag may have fallen back on its original line of creating stories, with the hope of selling more copies against the backdrop of its new-found "status" in light of the Harry leak. I mean, the British papers were among the first to leak the engagement between Charles and Camilla. They have been chomping at the bit with regards to William's engagement for years now, why would they not break the news in the UK? BTW, didn't the Daily Kate claim that "William is not ready" and "will not be railroaded into an engagement"? So which is it, really? unsure

I think the Harry leak has nothing to do with Kate. New Idea took the story from that one online blog which had posted it before. And honestly most here had already guessed as much anyways.
I don't believe that there was an engagement in Mustique hence I don't think Kate had anything to do with a "leak" of that story either. If she wanted to leak she'd do so to the DM (and make them stop writing unfavourable strories about her in return).

Well it would fit with the story about the Queen saying Kate has to get a job first.  After all, why would the Queen set a condition for something she hasn't been asked yet?
