Senior members of the Royal Family have been given honorary RAF titles to mark the monarchy's strong links with the service, with several connected to bases in Lincolnshire.
Prince William, 26, has been made Honorary Air Commandant for RAF Coningsby near Lincoln.

Prince William appointed Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Coningsby

Quote
Queen Elizabeth II has approved the appointments of several members of the British Royal Family to key Royal Air Force commands. These appointments are honorary appointments and do not confer on the individuals any rank within the service as such.

Harry, 24, a Lieutenant in his brother's former regiment the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals, has become Honorary Air Commandant for RAF Honington near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

congrats to them!   they're both Commodore-in-Chiefs in the Royal Navy as well.  the army will probably be next. ^_^

I don't know why everyone is congratulating them... it isn't like they did anything to deserve it?

Suffolk airbase honour for Prince Harry--Suffolk & Essex Online (also talks about his visit to the area last year)
Prince Harry's RAF honour--Monsters and Critics

I don't know why everyone is congratulating them... it isn't like they did anything to deserve it?
but they dont need to deserve it. Wink  i get your point though....and they probably do as well!  i'm sure they are honored to get it but i wouldn't be surprised if their own accomplishments mean a bit more to them. ^_^

but its not just for them.....its for the RAF as well.

Rebecca Hopfensperger, county councillor for the base, said: “It is really good news. The base really deserves it - they've been involved in active duty on a number of occasions recently and they have lost people.  They deserve some kind of honour and this is really good news, both for the base and for the county as a whole.”

I understand your viewpoint, Jenee, and I agree to a certain extent.  Wills and Harry have been active in the military, however the appointment of a title to those who are not truly associated with the military - such as Camilla I don't agree with.

i think i understand a title being bestowed on the boys. because they went through the trials and gone through extreme training.

but for someone like Camilla to actually have a military title because of the position that she's married into, i don't think that's very commendable.

Indeed, but that is how the British Military and Monarchy works, every high ranking royal is bound to get some of these appointments, The Queen Mother had many, the Princess Margaret and Diana, Princess of Wales too had several military appointments.

Yes, I am aware that this is how the military and monarchy work, however I still feel no need to applaud someone for being bestowed certain privileges for simply existing. My prerogative.

Good for the boys. That's cool. (And yay, Wills has a Royal Duty now that isn't sports related! Woohoo!)

And I understand why non-military members of the RF (like Camilla, etc) get these appointments as well. It's not because of their own personal links with the service, but because of the familial links. The members who have served can't be given honorary positions are every base that deserves one, but there are plenty of other members of the family who can. So, wives who have never served get appointments like these as well. It's still great for the base to be rewarded in such a way.
