Quote
Stephen K Amos has revealed Prince Harry once told him he didn’t sound like a black man. The comedian told Channel 5 show The Wright Stuff that he met the royal after a stand-up show. After complimenting him on his set, Harry apparently said: 'You don't sound like a black man, do you?' But Stephen put the 24-year-old’s gaffe down to a bad attempt at making banter.

These articles just don't stop do they...it's getting very tiring...

Well, based on what "sounding black" means where I'm from, I'd take it as a compliment, because it would mean he spoke well. (No offense meant to anyone, but Ebonics seems to go a little too far where I'm from, and it's practically impossible to understand.)

Probably. Amos is a English comedian living in London so I'm assuming he must speak with a English accent. You got to love Harry  ^_^

he's an Englishman.  his real accent sounds kind of "posh" but he uses a Caribbean (?) accent in a lot of his performances. ^_^

i dont want to think he's making it up just to hurt Harry or whatever....we've had articles about Harry attending comedy shows before....but i cant help but wonder if maybe Harry didn't really make that comment.  Amos uses race, accent etc as a comedy subject a lot and with Harry in the news for it....   he might just be using it all as a base for a "I met Prince Harry the other day and--" joke.

his stuff is on YouTube if you'd like to watch him in action. Wink

:Lao3:   :Lao3:   :Lao3:  This guy was funny as ***e, really very funny.  Now I am certain that he new Harry was joking with him because he has such a great sense of humor.  When he first started speaking in his English accent, sounded the Prince Charles, he was so posh but he did speak in many accents in that performance.

I think that there may be a campaign in the media to crucify Harry but WHY?

I guess we didn't need anymore evidence of Harry's ignorance and insensitivity but here we are...again. I'm glad Chelsy dumped him. He was probably an embarassment to her and her family. Sad

He's 24 years old...he's a fully grown man! He's old enough to take responsibility for his actions now

I dont mean to offend anyone BUT ...

The comedian bases his jokes, his entire act on race and accents! Why is he making out that what Prince Harry said was offensive. I think he is a hypocrite ... its alright for him when hes on stage but nobody is allowed to do the same thing toward him off stage ... pppfftt.

Yes PH is 24 yrs old, I just think he has a foot in mouth problem. In everything he has done, you cant say he has done it to intentionally offend ... the problem is he does it without thinking of the consequences! If he did say it (which I doubt for some reason) I really hope he starts to think before he acts/speaks!!

Personally, I find this comment to be a little rude. Not every black person speaks Ebonics. Even if he was just trying to joke around, he really needs to think things through before he acts.

You know, I've never understood it. Black people can get away with making what are really fairly offensive racist jokes about white people and nobody says anything (or they go, "Oh it's just comedy! What's the big deal?"), but if a white person turns it around and goes the other way? All hell breaks loose! Nearly every black comedian I've ever seen does ridiculous impressions of the "honky white accent," talking all kinds of trash about various and sundry white people stereotypes, and nobody thinks anything of it. But when a white comedian does an ebonics accent or jokes about black stereotypes, they're considered all "edgy and dangerous", and oftentimes people get pissed. This is so ridiculous and stupid, IMO. I can concede that the Nazi uniform was foolish; I'll even give up trying to defend "Our little Paki friend," even though it was clearly a joke. But this? Really. Especially when the comedian, according to other posters here (I'm not familiar with him I'm afraid), uses various accents in his show. How is that not offensive? Seriously, unless he's one of the three black comedians on the planet who's never done the "honky white person" voice, or made fun of any other accent, then I don't think he has a right to say anything. Not a damn thing.

As much as I like Harry, these racial gaffs can not continue to be explained by "Harry just being Harry or he was being funny."  Although this comedian does discuss race in his jokes, that does not mean he would not be offended by a white man saying that to him. What some black men/woman call each other would not be acceptable if a white person said it. That is just the way it is. Not to mention what Harry said is ignorant and it could only be somewhat acceptable coming from a childs mouth. I am dumbfounded by the fact that Harry thought this was funny to say to a black man. I would hope those expensive schools they attended would have chapters discussing race, but most importantly it should have been discussed by his parents or at least a nanny.

I completely get what you are saying Sillyjobug. And for the most part, I agree with you. My problem with Harry’s comment is that he is stereotyping a whole entire race of people. I get that this particular comedian makes a living off of making fun of people, but not every black person does that.

I don’t think Harry is a racist, but I don’t think he has a real good filtering system either.

Yes, that is our world today. If the monarchy wants to continue to be ambassador's for the UK and beyond, then it is vital that they learn what is considered "racist" behavior. My mother grew up in the deep south where segregation was real. She did not attend school with black students. There was a black part of town and a white part of town. Whites rode in the front of the bus and blacks in the back. Everything was separate. She would have never said something like Harry did to a person of color. She is far less educated than Harry or William, yet her knowledge exceeds them. One time can be forgiven, but there is a pattern of behavior here that is not socially acceptable. I would hope Harry would have the intelligence not to ask President Obama that question. unsure

Sometimes even the best education can't teach a person common sense.

Could you even begin to imagine the backlash if he ever did?!?!

I agree sillyjobug and arabella. I don't really know what to say regarding all this so called 'racism'...I really think he isn't but he's being eaten alive in a PC world. If these little misjudgements keep happening he will ruin his reputation and it won't be able to be fixed with  a little statement from Clarence House
