I wonder if there are any portraits of just Harry? The portrait is a typical royal PR excercise. William shall be king following Charles so William has been painted standing looking down at this brother with his body facing the viewer center of portrait. Harry is sitting, looking up at his brother his body is side view and to the left of the portrait so the viewers eye will immediately be drawn to William. Dare I say it, but William has also been painted with having more hair.

I think it's a great piece of art, of the two Princeses..
Hale , what you have said is true... Prince Wm being the main character in the portrait =#1 and Prince Harry, the spare sitting and less ... although Prince Harry does wear his medal of time spent on the front lines... Still and all it is an exceptional portrait and I'm sure there will be single ones, of both princes, in time...

Totally, Hale! Harry's hair is the best part of the painting -- and not a bad part of real life, either.

Now, The Nat Por Gal has an online shop...and perchance soon there will be a poster of this portrait...or post cards or anthing bearing their likenesses !! Here's some images of their Mother from the same gallery: http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait-list.php?search=sp&sText=princess diana

Hale, you are so observant! Yes I do believe that some extra yellow strokes might have been added to William head, but they still left some spotty areas or perhaps its the lighting? Lovely portrait, one of the best. Although I loved Zara's drapped with the British flag by that Scottish artist too. Hazza still looking good though. Love to see a portrait of Hazza and Nacho together on polo field. Yummy!!

I'm looking at the rather gigantic version of the portrait on the Mail website ... I know they're portrayed as being in Clarence House -- can anyone identify the subject of the portrait over William's left shoulder? I suppose it might be an invention, as the scene itself supposedly is, but I wondered if there was a real portrait being referenced. ETA: The Mail article says that William's leaning on the doorway to the Clarence House library, and that the painter did do sessions with the two of them at Clarence House, so it may well be genuine rather than an imagined painting...

I think the portrait is a much more accurate representation of Harry than of William. Harry's hair, complexion and body look exactly right. The only thing that looks slightly off is his nose, although I'm not sure why. William's is very off-putting to me. Why is it half in shadow?? And his face looks too narrow. The eyes also look too close together and maybe a little bit too small. And it almost looks like he has bags under his eyes, like he looks tired. Wonder if the artist had a secret crush on Harry and painted him in a bit more of a flattering way Oh, and I also think William looks a bit too short. If Harry were to stand up, he would be several inches taller than William! Whereas in real life, I believe William is a bit taller than Harry. Anyone else notice this?

I think the portrait is a much more accurate representation of Harry than of William. Harry's hair, complexion and body look exactly right. I think Harry has easier features to paint because he has rounder features and distinctive coloring in his hair and face. William's is very off-putting to me. Why is it half in shadow?? And his face looks too narrow. The eyes also look too close together and maybe a little bit too small. And it almost looks like he has bags under his eyes, like he looks tired. William, when he's not smiling, has a pretty narrow face and it looks even more narrow these days with the lack of hair. I think the way his cheeks were painted makes him look kind of old. William is leaning into the wall a bit so perhaps that accounts for looking a little shorter than normal. We're really dissecting this painting.

wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! i've really been looking forward to seeing this portrait. Nicky Phillips didn't disappoint. i really look forward to seeing it in person some day. Hale , what you have said is true... Prince Wm being the main character in the portrait =#1 and Prince Harry, the spare sitting and less ^the artist pretty much said just that. "I wanted Prince William to be slightly higher in the portrait, for obvious reasons." although....and maybe its just because i'm an Ite....Harry seems to stick out a lot more in the painting. and to have been painted a bit better. like others have said she really got his coloring just right. it could be because he's in the forefront but maybe wanderlust is right....Phillips could be a bit of an Ite too. Harry seems to have a much more open personality then William so maybe he was easier for her to capture on canvas? Dare I say it, but William has also been painted with having more hair. it was started in 2008...maybe he just had more hair then? can anyone identify the subject of the portrait over William's left shoulder? articles are saying its a portrait of the Queen Mother. although i'm not so sure....it looks like the person has a beard! more articles..... I'm so glad you pointed that out Hale, I noticed it immediately! I thought I was being too cynical until I read your post. All in all, I do think the painting is really beautiful, but I kind of wish the roles were reversed.

excellent detective work Ursula! I'm so glad you pointed that out Hale, I noticed it immediately! I thought I was being too cynical until I read your post. All in all, I do think the painting is really beautiful, but I kind of wish the roles were reversed. me too. i have it set as my wallpaper and my desktop icons are all over Harry. i'll have to reverse it. seriously though....for all William is standing up and wearing his Garter sash Harry stands out more somehow. if William was meant to be the one sticking out (and he was) its not working for me. Great sleuthing, Ursula...
The Reason Harry stands out more in the portrait is because he is closest to the Viewer, in the Foreground, whilst William is in the Background....in the doorway, Harry is on THIS side of the door. It's known simply as placement.
The painting style is almost fully Impressionistic, with Harry having only half of his face portrayed with the impression of a lumpy Gobstopper in his right cheek, rather than an apple cheek that he is....and his side-burn looks like it's painted on instead of actual hair. William's face is heavily shadowed and therefore indistinct. At a glance, you immediately know who they are but the details are vague and blurry.....Still I like it because of the message it conveys. Harry seems focused on his brother's words and William seems intent on speaking with Harry...though 'casually', not simply light banter.

Exactly, and I don't think of it as Harry being "less than" by any stretch - actually, I think it was a wonderful method of downplaying the difference in their royal status. I really do love this portrait - any chance of it becoming an avatar on this forum?? Eh, ladies?? PLEASE.................. Does their mother still have her portrait in the gallery too? Just curious.
NOT when I was there a few years ago.
