I think it's important for William to adapt to the formalities of where he's going. He did away with the formal dinners and protocol in Australia precisely because he was in Australia--where they are more egalitarian and don't want to be looked down upon. Not that protocol is looking down on someone else, but I can certainly see the Aussies balking to having to bow and scrape to a 27 year old.
I think William did a far more effective job as an ambassador for his country by showing, despite his position, he is still "real" and can muck in at a barbeque and can have fun and race and yacht and be as informal as it is for him to be. That gives the Australians a future monarch to whom they can relate --and thus one they'd be more inclined to want to keep around.
I think his trip was a roaring success. Even though it didn't have the international coverage that Diana's tour did, his trip was successful where it mattered --in Australia.
Exactly right...........it was successful where it mattered. Well said

The true winning part of this tour was that he adapted to "us". He did away with the pomp and ceremony which would not have gone down very well at all here.
And saying P--S to our PM, well poor old Kev would have been a little uncomfortable. But that is what Australian's are about with humour, pushing the boundaries.
Charles would have been a flop. He doesn't have the ability to show empathy like William does.
The republican movement is very strong here, and I doubt it will be enough to stay it off.
However if left Aussies feeling acknowledged and part of the global news cycle.

Gec, thank you for sharing your opinion. I believed that was the case regarding this tour, but it's nice to hear it from someone who lives it. You would know, wouldn't you?

I have said that it's not good for William to be unpretentious; that is good to see him as a cool man and his low-key style. Unfortuneltly for him, I don't think that a lack of standing is a good job because he represents his country and the Queen of NZ and AUstralia. He is an ambassor and as such that's a misbehavior.
Despite being 26 and trained for these trips,IMO he's still inexperienced to act like an ambassador. He's just acting like himself, being genuine and naive. It's for sure that he has to learn to act like an ambassador and act seriously from time to time but he has just started.I believe he'll balance the fun and enormity of his title and duty in a short time. The more tours he moke, the more he will be loved because people will get to know him then. For now people don't know much about him, have no idea as to who he really is,they aren't sure if he cares other or has any serios interest in helping people etc.(I doubt he cares about poor and unhelathy people as much as her mom given his actions thus far) But I hope he will change one day and prove to eb her mother's son.If he can achieve it,then he will attract crowds , love, interest as much as her mom did. He has to show that he is not just about gf,headlines, clubs, forced trips etc..He has to prove he harbours love and affection for other people and shouldn't hesitate to show it. Other wise if he handles these trips like his father did,and take part in them just because of necessity ,he won't gain any more popularity and love ....

But Wills had to have security around when he did this. Could not risk having the heir to the throne mugged! He can't be totally like "the rest of us."

Hello everyone. I'm not new to this forum in that I have been reading and digesting all posts for some time now, but I am new to posting myself. Hope I get this right!
Hale, I would just like to say that the fact that Big Brother gets more coverage than William's overseas tour rather says more about us here in the UK than it does about him.
I thought his trip was a tremendous success and I would like to see him approach his granny, rubbing his hands together (as he seems to have a habit of doing) and saying, "Where to next, Granny?"
I can only hope.

Sandy I agree with u.It was a great move but it still looks a bit staged for PR.maybe it's not but it doesn't make me feel surprised or believe how much he cares about homeless people. Maybe because Diana set the bar too high, and the passion, love and affection in her eyes were so real ...She made everything wholeheartedly.. She spent time with them in person, raise money etc.Bottomline she devoted herself to helping them. Those actions were more than a shot on the cover or showing up in an event designed to raise fund in tuxedos. He should put more effort and spend more time in order to help them, then it wouldn't be questioned if it was a move created by his advisors or not. I don't mean what he did was insufficient or fake, but I wanna see more.It might be a good start.

The big news here has been Haiti and the Iraq Enquiry. It strikes me odd that now the tour is over the press are hyping it and yet it never made front page not even as a subsidiary story. Sorry, but that is how it went down over here.
Someone from another forum kept on saying that it was constantly on the BBC news, but it wasn't, I can only assume they were watching BBC World. Which is different from BBC England.
The thing is, in a world of different kinds of technology the BRF need to embrace it. Low key doesn't work when you consider that the BRF are having to compete with these celebs who have made a career of being famous for being famous. I realise that is awful, but in England I am so ticked off with people with no talent and yet they are everywhere. Katie Price or Jordan is a perfect example. She gets more coverage than anyone in the BRF.
The BRF may not want another Diana, but they better wise up and realise that it is that kind of exposure which is going to draw attention to their good works.

I would say the Royal family don't want another Diana, she outshone them (without even trying to) and look at how they behaved. Nope they want meek mouses who will fall into line and they get that with Camilla and they will more than likely get that with Kate.

I have said it before, and I can repeat it, there was a lot on British TV stations in Britain about of William's tour down under. I watched, so please don't tell me I'm a lying! Yes, Haiti came first, but they didn't forget William. The papers had reports before, during and after the tour. I'm really looking forward to your reports on the press Harry will get this weekend. Somehow I fell you'll tell us he gets a lot more than William.

I agree about what they want and don't want, but they won't be able to control the media interest in Kate's every move. However, I do believe that Kate, like Sophie, is well aware of history and will tread carefully around her in-laws, but there's just so much tiptoeing Kate will be able to do. As a young, attractive lady married to a handsome future King, the wow-factor will be there, whether the Windsors want it or not.

Anita - even here in Ontario, there were news items regarding PW's trip and all very positive. Now they were NOT a 5 minute piece, but we did know about the trip and the reception he received.
No, they don't want another Diana, but Kate will have other young married royals to relate to. Peter Philips and his wife Autumn; Zara and Mike, when they do marry.... Freddie Windsor ( although I doubt K & W will socialize too much here)..plus their immediate circle of friends. I'm sure through Carol and if Kate reads enough, she'll have gone over the Diana era and see what Charles was so jealous about and she won't allow that to happen between her and William. She will be submissive in her role ( not bashing!!)..

IMO there wasn't much coverage of PW's visit over here in England, obviously there was coverage but the time allocated to the visit was barely a few minutes, which is why I was so glad of the links to videos posted online, I actually missed the PW part on the BBC news and had to go and watch it online and it was less than 3 mins long (I dwnloaded it onto my realplayer which is why I knw how long it was.

I heard it wasn't as big a success as they thought - granted I don't follow it as intensely as those on this board but I read this on a site I do visit rather frequently. http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/43051873.html

I think I'll stick with reputable newspapers and all the videos that are available on the subject -many of them posted right here.

For starters - the purpose of this tour was NOT to build relations and endear him to the British public, but to those in New Zealand and Australia. Why would it be heavily covered on the news in England? Because that is how royal tours used to be covered in this country and I am not just talking about during Diana's time. It's hard for many to believe, but Charles when younger used to attract huge crowds. The royals in general used to attract huge crowds. Then after Diana married into the family and following the Morton book it then became the Diana show. My argument is the BRF through their own misdemeanours have taken a huge knock back. Republicans are not only raising their voices in Australia, but here also. If PW was genuine about getting to know Australia, then he should have toured extensively in NZ & OZ land. That in my opinion would have raised the profiles of all the members of the RF. Instead, he went down under not because he was invited, but because the Queen commanded him to go in her place. That's not very promising. As for those who say they are following the tour via this website and gleaning all their information from here. I understand that because everyone does such a fantastic job in providing us with links. However, I cannot help but feel that all the info which is grouped here has lulled members into believe this tour is a phenomenon. It isn't. As for our press, I was surprised by their actions in the aftermath of this tour. Everyone was rushing to write articles saying how great it was. They printed more words in the aftermath of this tour than they did during this.

Hale it was his first tour so I don't think we can find fault with the length of it. And I don't see anything wrong with the Queen sending him in her place. Perhaps she "commanded" that he go because his father has been reluctant to do so. And speaking for myself, I don't feel that I've been "lulled" into believing anything. The proof was in the pictures, the videos and the firsthand accounts of people who were there.

In 3 months time, lets see what the polls say then. In 3 months time it will all be forgotten. Why? Because PW will retreat back into S&R training and if anything was accomplished in NZ and OZ it shall become as no more than a flash in the pan. If it is to be sustained then PW should come out of S&R training, take up full time royal duties and continue to work and build on what was accomplished down under. After all William is the future of the monarchy and if he is to have any influence in the future he MUST start working for this NOW whilst he is YOUNG. The fans of today shall become his biggest supporters of the future.

Hale, there has always been a republican section in Britain and, like all empty vessels, they make the most noise. Are you forgetting Willie Hamilton? There is no chance, that in the foreseeable future, Britain will go republican.
