Prince William has arrived at RAF Valley on Anglesey to start his training as a search and rescue pilot.
The 27-year-old prince, who is known as Flt Lt Wales, will be based on the island until the end of the summer.
If successful on the course, he will become a fully operational pilot with one of the six UK-based RAF Search and Rescue Force flights later this year.

Nothing's permanent in the military with a future King. He's not a career military man.

This time, last year, RAF news - "The Prince will spend up to three months on the South Atlantic islands when he completes his 18-month RAF Search and Rescue (SAR) course in 2009."

UK Search and Rescue
We have six Search and Rescue flights in the UK. These work alongside four civilian coastguard and two Royal Navy flights to form a unified national Search and Rescue service. We work together to ensure that no area in the UK is more than one hour’s flight away in daylight. At night we can get to anywhere in the country in less than one-and-a-half hours.
International Search and Rescue
Our flights also work internationally: we operate in Cyprus (84 Squadron) and the Falkland Islands (1564 Flight). These teams, like their colleagues at home, can respond to man-made crises and natural disasters all over the world at any time of day or night.

I also understand that those RAF personnel and their family whom have been stationed in Akrotiri, Cyprus love it Wink

Yes, but some posters here and there apparently didn't know that. All trainees are students = weekends, national holidays off.

The heir to the throne, known in the RAF as Flt Lt Wales, passed the test, which involved a flight simulator plunging into a freezing swimming pool, ''with flying colours'', instructors said.

The Prince and fellow RAF students had to escape from inside the simulator at the Offshore Survival Centre in Fleetwood, Lancs, and get above water before they all ''drowned''.

Hmmm...quite interesting. Can't say I can see William remaining in the service at this point. I wonder....Interesting timing. We shall see I suppose.
